Congress to "vigorously oppose" delayed deadline for cargo screening

Key lawmakers on Capitol Hill say they will resist efforts to "water down" requirements for screening 100% of cargo aboard passenger flights by mid-2010. "The logic is clear: If we screen passengers and their checked baggage, we must screen the other cargo onboard the same aircraft," says Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, chairwoman of the transportation security subcommittee, which is holding hearings on the subject. But airlines and industry experts agree the deadline will be difficult -- and costly -- to meet. Bloomberg (3/19)
